Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, recently announced that Gold Fields, a leading global gold producer with operations consisting of multiple continents, has successfully migrated its comprehensive SAP and treasury systems to AWS. This move is a key component of Gold Fields’ digital transformation strategy, enabling the company to modernize its technology infrastructure while leveraging AWS’s advanced analytics, machine learning (ML), and generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. These tools are expected to unlock new insights that will drive operational efficiency, enhance workplace safety, and transform Gold Fields into a more data-driven enterprise.
Strini Mudaly, Group ICT Vice President at Gold Fields, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “AWS is helping us modernize our infrastructure, improve governance, and drive cost efficiencies. We chose AWS as our preferred cloud provider due to its proven operational experience at scale and its commitment to innovation. We look forward to continuing our journey with AWS, utilizing its expertise and cutting-edge solutions to transform our business.”
The migration was executed in collaboration with Deloitte, which worked closely with Gold Fields and AWS to transition the global SAP estates across three continents to the AWS cloud. Aasif Karachi, Director and Africa AWS Leader at Deloitte Consulting, highlighted the precision of the migration process: “Our multi-disciplinary team of Deloitte experts, working across various time zones, ensured that every aspect of the migration—including data privacy, regulatory compliance, and technology—was managed with meticulous care, resulting in a seamless transition with zero impact on business operations. Leveraging AWS’s secure and scalable infrastructure, this migration has reduced operational costs and enhanced data processing speeds across critical systems while maintaining Gold Fields’ strong governance and risk management standards.”
Chris Erasmus, AWS Country General Manager, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, noting, “Our partnership with Gold Fields demonstrates the transformative power of cloud technology in the mining industry. By migrating its critical SAP systems to AWS, Gold Fields is now positioned to modernize its platform and fully harness the potential of its internal data through advanced analytics and machine learning.”
With its SAP systems now operating on AWS, Gold Fields is poised to embrace next-generation technology and data insights, aligning with its future business strategy. The company is also exploring AWS’s Industrial Data Fabric and Generative AI capabilities to further enhance data management practices, as well as to support safety and process improvements in an industry that is continuously evolving.
