Figure, a Californian based company recently released their next generation humanoid robot called Figure 02 (F.02).
Figure which founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock of Vettery and Archer Aviation where they aimed to bring a commercially viable general purpose for humanoid robots to the market. The creation of this humanoid robot is targeting production spaces where it aims to improve operations as well as efficiency.
Figure engineers have taken a ground-up hardware and software redesign which comes with upgrades to AI systems, computer vision, the battery pack, electronics, sensors and actuators. It also comes with an onboard microphone and speaker for engaging in one-on-one conversations that is powered by custom AI models developed in collaboration OpenAI.
The Figure 02 robot is no different from the Figure 01 in stature, but this new model comes with several physical improvements. The first is the matte black on the skin which used to be a chrome metal finish on the Figure 01. It is also 5 feet 6-inches tall and has a payload capacity of 44 pounds and weights at 154 pounds and comes with a 2.25 kWh custom battery pack to increase energy delivery up to 50%.
The model can function for five hours and can move at a speed of 4.0 feet per second. Figure 02 operates on an electric system that is designed to adapt to the world.
Figure 02 is currently being used at BMWs production site in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where it is being used for AI data gathering and is being trained for practical applications.
The robot is equipped with vision language model that can interpret visual data from six RGB cameras, which allows the robot to make decisions based on its surroundings. It comes with iteration of human-scale hands that provide 16 degrees of freedom for it to perform a wide range of human-like tasks.
The advanced capabilities of Figure 02 show the company’s vision with potential applications that go beyond industrial usage to everyday home use.
