The Lusaka Magistrates Court has handed down long prison sentences to the leaders of a large-scale cybercrime ring on Friday, according to The Star.
Li Xianlin, identified as the leader of the crime ring, along with several other members, received prison sentences of up to 11 years. Gu Tianjiao, the sole female member of the group, was sentenced to 7 years and was reportedly visibly distressed during her sentencing. In addition to their prison terms, each individual was fined $1,500 and $3,000 (£1,180 and £2,360).
The trial, which had been ongoing for several weeks, culminated in guilty pleas from the defendants. The case originated in April when Zambian authorities, led by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and supported by the police, immigration department, and anti-terrorism unit, conducted a multi-agency raid on a Chinese-owned business in Roma, a wealthy suburb of Lusaka.
This raid was the result of an investigation into the rising incidence of cybercrime in Zambia. During the operation, 77 individuals were arrested, including 22 Chinese nationals, a Cameroonian, and several Zambians.
The Zambians implicated in the case were indicted in April but were released on bail to assist the police with further investigations. Authorities revealed that these individuals were engaged in deceptive online conversations with unsuspecting mobile users on platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and various chatrooms, using pre-scripted dialogues.
The cybercrime ring operated under the guise of a company named Golden Top Support Services. The DEC director general disclosed that the company had employed unsuspecting Zambians, aged 20 to 25, to carry out fraudulent activities.
During the raid, authorities discovered 11 SIM boxes, devices capable of routing calls through legitimate phone networks. These boxes are often used for internet fraud and online scams.
“The firm used these unsuspecting employees to engage in deceptive conversations with unsuspecting mobile users across various platforms,” stated the DEC director general. He added that the operation was a sophisticated scheme designed to exploit both the employees and the mobile users.
The sentencing of Li Xianlin and his associates marks a significant victory in the fight against cybercrime in Zambia, underscoring the commitment of Zambian authorities to cracking down on fraudulent activities and protecting its citizens from cyber threats.
