Recognizing this imperative, Kaspersky, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, has been at the forefront of fostering synergy between law enforcement agencies and private entities. A notable initiative in this endeavour is the Kaspersky Expert Training series delivered to INTERPOL law enforcement officers, aimed at equipping them with advanced threat detection and mitigation strategies.
The training series, facilitated by Kaspersky’s renowned Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) and GERT experts, unfolded new horizons in reverse engineering and incident response for INTERPOL staff. Spanning from September to December 2023, the training encompassed three core modules: Reverse Engineering 101, Targeted Malware Reverse Engineering, and Windows Incident Response. These modules, offered as part of the collaboration agreement inked between Kaspersky and INTERPOL in 2019, were meticulously designed to enhance the operational capabilities of law enforcement officers in combating cyber threats.
A key feature of the training series was its comprehensive nature, combining online courses with live Q&A sessions conducted by experts from GReAT and GERT. Furthermore, participants were provided access to Kaspersky’s Virtual Lab, a secure online environment tailored to augment practical skills. Among the courses, the Targeted Malware Reverse Engineering module emerged as the most sought-after, offering insights into real-life malware analysis, reverse-engineering of malicious documents and exploits, and proficiency in advanced reverse-engineering tools.
In the “Reverse Engineering 101” course, officers delved into the fundamentals of assembly and Go languages, along with the intricacies of reverse-engineering programs scripted in C++. Meanwhile, the Windows Incident Response module equipped participants with the acumen to detect and respond to cyber incidents, analyse victim machines, and discern various attack techniques, including Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs).
Yuliya Shlychkova, Vice President of Public Affairs at Kaspersky, underscored the significance of knowledge sharing and collaboration in combating cyber threats. She emphasized Kaspersky’s commitment to prompt threat detection and mitigation, facilitated by global telemetry and proactive research initiatives. Craig Jones, Director of Cybercrime at INTERPOL, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the tangible benefits of collaboration between law enforcement and the private sector in bolstering cyber resilience.
Since 2019, Kaspersky researchers have conducted over 10 cybersecurity training events for INTERPOL, reaffirming their commitment to capacity building in cybercrime investigation. Looking ahead, Kaspersky intends to sustain this collaboration in 2024 and beyond, underscoring its enduring dedication to advancing global cybersecurity efforts.
