The microblogging and social networking company, Twitter has revealed that it will not be tolerating any hateful speech and it is updating the rules to ban anything that is in line with hateful conduct.
Recently making the announcement on the website, Twitter said they create their rules to keep people safe on Twitter, and they continuously evolve to reflect the realities of the world they operate within. This follows a series of changes that the social media platform has made in recent years, which includes prohibiting hate speech against religious groups in July 2019. Earlier this year, the platform banned language that dehumanises on the basis of age, disability, or disease.
“As we develop the Twitter Rules in response to changing behaviours and challenges with serving the public conversation, we understand the importance of considering a global perspective and thinking about how policies may impact different communities and cultures. Since 2019, we’ve prioritized feedback from the public, external experts, and our own teams to inform the continued development of our hateful conduct policy.” – Twitter said.
The company provided examples of the types of tweets that will no longer be allowed on the platform, which include:
“All [national origin] are cockroaches who live off of welfare benefits and need to be taken away.”
“People who are [race] are leeches and only good for one thing.”
“There are too many [national origin/race/ethnicity] maggots in our country and they need to leave!”
Twitter also adds on its blog post that it is taking a research-driven approach with the Twitter Rules. “In addition to applying our iterative and research-driven approach to the expansion of the Twitter Rules, we’ve reviewed and incorporated public feedback to ensure we consider a wide range of perspectives,” the company said.
