Apple is expected to finally unveil the iPhone 12 with 5G connectivity, a technical upgrade that will help the company keep pace with competitors and increase adoption of 5G technology at the special “Hi Speed” event.
Analysts predict the new capability could prompt a “super cycle” of iPhone upgrades as the company showed off a range of new gadgets including Apple Watches and iPads in its September event, but for the first time in years didn’t released a new iPhone.
Today’s launch is being held online – like last month’s reveal and Apple’s developer conference in June – and will broadcast at 6pm UK time.
5G is next generation wireless network technology that’s expected to change the way people live and work however, Apple (AAPL) — and iPhone 12 customers — could have a challenge: 5G is still in the process of being rolled out and services using the network’s faster speeds remain relatively limited, meaning consumers may not experience immense differences compared to their old 4G phones. At least not right away.
“This year, next year, the story for Apple is going to be: How do they manage consumer expectations when the network isn’t there?” said DA Davidson analyst Tom Forte.
Here’s what you can expect from Apple:
Apple’s September event focused mainly on the Apple Watch
The firm is set to unveil four devices in three different sizes in the iPhone 12 range.
They are rumoured to include super-fast 5G wireless connectivity for the first time, with the models going on sale on 23 October.
The smallest device is expected to have a 5.4-inch screen, two will measure 6.1 inches, and the biggest will have a mammoth 6.7-inch display.
The biggest version and one of the 6.1-inch models are expected to be higher-end devices with the latest technology, potentially called the iPhone 12 Pro range.
