State-owned South African infrastructure provider Broadband Infraco has announced the appointment of Gift Zowa who will be as acting CEO.
Broadband Infraco announced that Zowa’s appointment is effective from November 16 and he resumes his new role and replaces Andre Matseke as per a statement from Broadband Infraco.
Armed with a BSc honours degree in electrical and electronic engineering and an MBA from the University of Pretoria, BBI said Zowa is a seasoned executive, with experience in telecommunications, IT, strategic management, and business management.
“We congratulate Mr. Zowa on his appointment and wish him success as he leads the company into new frontiers,” states BBI board chairperson Zandile Kabini.
Before taking over his role as acting CEO, Zowa occupied the position of CTO at BBI for 10 years, having launched his career at Siemens prior to becoming head of telecommunications at state-owned Sentech.
Looking at his role at Sentech, he was accountable and instrumental in designing and running the MyWireless data communication product, according to a statement.
There’s no doubt Zowa comes with valuable experience as he also had stints at Nokia Networks, formerly Nokia Siemens Networks, as head of mobile broadband for Africa and the Middle East.
Zowa is also a member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, and a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers in the UK, including being a registered professional engineer with ECSA.
ITWeb posted that the South African government is in the process of merging BBI and signal distributor Sentech, which will see the state-owned Digital Infrastructure Company established.
This company BBI, according to the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, will boast capabilities for backhaul fibre, as well as access infrastructure.
In December last year, it was revealed that a process that would potentially see BBI acquire Sentech was on the table.
