The well-known Kenyan mobility startup, BuuPass has announced its acquisition of QuickBus, aiming to extend its operations into Nigeria and South Africa. Founded in 2016, BuuPass operates as a B2B2C travel marketplace, enabling users to search, compare, and book tickets via USSD, mobile app, or web platforms. With over US$100 million in total sales value and more than six million tickets sold, BuuPass has firmly established its presence in the market.
The startup has gained momentum through participation in programs such as the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and securing funding from the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund. QuickBus, launched in 2019, specializes in aggregating long-distance bus tickets, providing customers with price comparisons and trip scheduling options, while assisting bus companies in enhancing profitability.
With the acquisition of QuickBus, BuuPass is strategically positioned to expand its footprint into South Africa and Nigeria. The company plans to incorporate over 5,000 additional routes into its network and integrate with more than 100 bus companies. Key online distribution partnerships, including those with FNB, Vodacom, and MTN, will also be leveraged.
Sonia Kabra, co-founder of BuuPass, expressed excitement about the expansion, emphasizing the company’s ambition to establish a comprehensive transport network across Africa, facilitating seamless regional and global travel.
