The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Mercedes-Benz is most likely their extensive line-up of luxury sedans and SUVs. Mercedes-Benz, on the other hand, has made a name for itself in the midsize van segment with their V-Class and Vito models, which offer a blend of luxury and practicality suitable for both business and family transportation.
Mercedes-Benz Vans introduced the latest iterations of the V-Class and Vito in Germany in July, and both are expected to arrive in South Africa. These updated models not only have better aesthetics, but also a slew of new technologies and improved comfort, raising the bar in their respective segments.
We are delighted with the latest versions of our esteemed V-Class and Vito models, representing another step forward in our commitment to enhancing luxury in private life and elevating the premium character in business,” said Marinus Venter, General Manager of Product & Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Vans SA. These new editions demonstrate our commitment to innovation, design, and quality.
While the exact specifications and pricing details for these models in South Africa have yet to be confirmed, the current generation V-Class is still available for purchase, with a starting price of R 1,246,934 and a choice of powertrains (V 220 d, V 250 d, and V 300 d) and trim levels (Avantgarde, Exclusive, Special Edition). Optional extras such as the AMG Line and Night packages are also available, allowing customers to personalise their vans.
The Vito is no longer sold as a new vehicle in South Africa, but there is more to come. Mercedes-Benz is expanding its commercial electric vehicle offerings with the EQV and eVito, both of which will be available in local markets soon.
While the new powertrain options for the V-Class and Vito were not disclosed, it is expected that they will continue to use the reliable 2.0-liter turbodiesel engines, delivering power outputs ranging from 120 to 174 kW to the rear wheels.
The latest models have a noticeable upgrade in terms of design, with a larger front grille proudly displaying the iconic three-pointed star badge on the bonnet, a first for the V-Class. The alloy wheels are clearly Maybach-inspired, and the LED headlights have been redesigned for a more modern appearance. The V-Class has a large 12.3-inch infotainment screen in the cabin, while the Vito has a slightly smaller 10.25-inch version.
Customers can customise their vans by selecting one of five exterior colours and alloy wheel sizes ranging from 17 to 19 inches. The current V-Class model can comfortably seat up to eight people, and the new model will keep this configuration. A variety of optional extras, including a panoramic sunroof, allow for even more customization.
Mercedes-Benz has also integrated its cutting-edge “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant, which is part of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system and allows drivers to control various functions intuitively and hands-free. Ambient lighting and navigation functionality further enhance the overall driving experience.
These vans include features such as blind spot assist, active lane-keeping assist, wireless charging, keyless entry, and a heated steering wheel, among others, for safety and convenience. While official specifications and pricing for the South African market have yet to be revealed, one thing is certain: Mercedes-Benz’s latest Vito and V-Class models will redefine luxury and comfort in the midsize van segment when they arrive on local shores.
