Google’s Chrome web browser version 86 added new security options on smartphones. This has been done to intensify password security on both Android and iOS devices by telling you if the passwords you’ve asked Chrome to remember have been compromised, and if so, how to fix them.
This new feature sends usernames and passwords to Google servers to check if they have been compromised in known data breaches. Google itself can’t see your usernames or passwords but can only check if they match ones that have been compromised.
Google’s password checks which arrives with the release of Chrome 86, only works if you use Chrome to store your passwords. The idea also is built into third-party password managers like 1Password and browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Microsoft Edge.
Along with the new rules and regulations, Google also mentioned that Android users can activate Enhanced Safe Browsing for more privacy. “Chrome can proactively protect you against phishing, malware, and other dangerous sites by sharing real-time data with Google’s Safe Browsing service. Among our users who have enabled checking websites and downloads in real time, our predictive phishing protections see a roughly 20% drop in users typing their passwords into phishing sites.”- they said.
For IOS users, Chrome has biometric authentication. “On iOS, you’ll now be able to authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your phone passcode. Additionally, Chrome Password Manager allows you to autofill saved passwords into iOS apps or browsers if you enable Chrome autofill in Settings.” – they added.
