Discovery Green and Sasol have partnered to introduce Ampli Energy, a renewable energy initiative designed to improve how South African businesses access clean, green electricity. This partnership offers flexible, monthly renewable energy options for small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs), which often face barriers to long-term energy solutions due to financial limitations and technical challenges.
Transforming the Renewable Energy Landscape
Previously, companies that wanted to shift to renewable energy had to enter into long-term power purchase agreements, often taking years to conclude. Most SMMEs could not sustain such commitments due to limited financial resources. Ampli Energy changes this by introducing a monthly subscription model, which avoids long-term contracts and infrastructure upgrades. Now, businesses access green energy on an affordable, month-to-month basis.
How It Works
Ampli Energy uses a method called wheeling, where solar and wind farms generate power that is transmitted through Eskom’s national grid directly to end users. This method eliminates the need for businesses to install solar panels or alternative systems. A key source of this clean power comes from the 69MW Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm in the Eastern Cape, which powers many of Ampli Energy’s early users.
Financial and Environmental Gains
One standout feature of Ampli Energy is its monthly cashback program. Businesses receive direct cash payments for using green energy, creating both a financial benefit and a sustainability incentive. Additionally, companies receive certificates that verify their use of renewable energy. These certificates help them demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability and support their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) objectives.
A Diverse and Expanding Client Base
Well-known South African businesses such as Nando’s, NetFlorist, Hatfield Motors, Sealand Gear, and several Sasol forecourts have already adopted Ampli Energy. Non-profits like Reach for a Dream and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital have also joined, highlighting the broad impact and reach of the platform.
The future of Green Energy
Ampli Energy already delivers over 450MWh annually, with aggressive plans for growth. This initiative is set to play a major role in South Africa’s shift toward renewable energy. By removing financial and technical barriers and offering tangible incentives, Ampli Energy creates a clear path for a more inclusive and sustainable energy future. As adoption increases, this model has the potential to redefine how businesses access clean energy across the country.
