Embattled power utility, Eskom, has announced in a statement that there will be no power outages/load shedding for today.
While the system remains vulnerable, several units have successfully returned, and emergency reserves have been replenished.
We may may be celebrating this relief but Load shedding is far from over. Eskom has said it is still monitoring the situation and will implement Load shedding if necessary. Our power grid is fragile and constantly at risk and this will only be alleviated once all pre-existing plants have undergone comprehensive maintenance and new plants have been completed.
The power utility explained that while the system remains vulnerable, several units have successfully returned, and emergency reserves have been replenished.
On Tuesday, it was reported that Stage 1 load shedding would continue until 9:00am on Wednesday.
As of 5:50am on Wednesday morning, unplanned outages were at 10 456 MW.
Eskom also reminded customers that the possibility of load shedding could increase over the next 18 months as critical maintenance is undergone to restore ageing equipment.
Although consumers are urged to use electricity sparingly, it still doesn’t erase the fact that load shedding is estimated to cost our economy between 8 to 10 billion rand a month understandably as Eskom currently provides 95% of our power.
