Johannesburg is set to welcome back a beloved landmark with a cutting-edge transformation. Early next year, the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome, formerly known as the Wits University Planetarium, will reopen its doors as the largest planetarium in sub-Saharan Africa. With a fully modernized digital dome, visitors can look forward to awe-inspiring visual journeys through the solar system.
On Wednesday, star-gazers and technology enthusiasts got a sneak peek at the revamped facility during exclusive demonstrations of its immersive new features. The dome’s state-of-the-art setup includes ten advanced digital projectors paired with surround sound, delivering a breath-taking cinematic experience.
Moumita Aich, the dome’s head, highlighted the potential impact of the updated technology on education and engagement. “This is screen time, but it’s screen time that teaches. In 20 to 30 minutes, you’ll walk away having learned so much,” she remarked.
Originally opened in 1960, the Wits Planetarium has long been a favourite destination for school groups and aspiring astronomers. Over the decades, tens of thousands of visitors have explored the wonders of the universe within its iconic dome.
The extensive renovations aim to expand its reach and enhance its purpose. Beyond inspiring young minds and curious adults, the dome will serve as a unique research space, enabling scientists to present and explore their findings on a 360-degree screen.
