SsangYong has unveiled its latest offering, the all-new Torres EVX, which is an electric SUV that replaces the previous Torres model’s internal combustion engine with an electrified powertrain. The new EV shares the same underpinnings as its predecessor but has undergone extensive exterior and interior updates to differentiate the two models. SsangYong has made significant changes to the Torres EVX’s front fascia, replacing the conventional headlight housings with LED details that line the width between the lighting signature. The SUV’s silhouette is similar to its predecessor, but the rim aesthetic is significantly different, and the interior has a dual-screen layout dominating the dashboard.
SsangYong, the oldest South Korean carmaker, has been absent from the South African market for several years, and with Mahindra SA ceasing operations, it is unlikely that we will see any new models from the company in the country anytime soon. However, the manufacturer continues to contend in many markets worldwide, and the Torres EVX is its latest offering. The rugged-looking SUV is not SsangYong’s first EV model, but it is a significant step towards the company’s electric future.
The all-new Torres EVX’s interior looks premium and seems capable of contending with the influx of Asian models entering the South African market. However, whether the model would be a suitable option would depend on the pricing. With a rich history of selling SUVs in South Africa, the question arises whether SsangYong would be able to make a return to the country. The company was recently acquired by the KG Group, and if it were to make a comeback, it would do so under the new name KG Mobility, as per the acquisition deal.
SsangYong will unveil all further details regarding the Torres EVX at the 2024 Seoul Mobility Show at the end of the month. The South Korean manufacturer has gone through great efforts to differentiate the EV from its predecessor, which employed ICE power courtesy of a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. Despite no longer being present in the South African market, SsangYong continues to move forward, following the global trend towards electric mobility. The Torres EVX represents a significant step in the company’s journey towards an all-electric future, and it will be interesting to see how it performs in markets worldwide.
