The AWS Summit Johannesburg 2024 was back yesterday, taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre.
One of the companies in attendance was the regular participant at the event, Capitec Bank. The bank did not necessarily say much in terms of upcoming changes or developments with Amazon Web Services (AWS) this year, however, it mention an exciting upcoming feature.
Towards the end of the event, there was a media roundtable that was moderated by AWS South Africa’s Country Manager, Chris Erasmus, who was chatting to Capitec’s Divisional Executive for Retail Client Experience Delivery, Blessing Mgaga, who spoke about the bank’s latest work.
Mgaga revealed that Capitec is planning to introduce an in-app feature which allows customers to contact the bank at a zero-rated (free) fee. This new feature will not replace the existing customer care hotline but will serve as an additional, cost-free communication channel for clients.
The service will be integrated into Capitec’s dedicated app, available on Android, iOS, and AppGallery. Mgaga elaborated on the feature’s convenience, stating, “Imagine the client can contact us from their phone of choice, in this instance on the Capitec app. Imagine they don’t have to have data to contact us, they don’t have to get out of the app and dial a number. Imagine that they can just press a button and they can immediately be in contact with us. Imagine that they could then talk to us for as long as they want, and when they close the app, the conversation is done.”
He confirmed that Capitec is close to finalizing the feature, with plans to roll it out to customers before the end of 2024. “We are in the final stages of some testing, and its rollout is imminent in the sense of the next couple months we should get it out,” Mgaga stated.
