Since announcing its initiative to bolster the resilience of its ATM network, FNB has successfully installed Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems at 900 of its planned 1,000 standalone ATMs. This effort, which commenced in November 2023, aims to ensure uninterrupted service for customers during power outages. The bank anticipates completing the remaining 100 installations by the end of June 2024, further enhancing access to financial services in power outage situations.
This significant progress aligns with FNB’s commitment to expanding its presence and investments within local communities. The initial phase of the project saw the successful installation of UPS systems at 300 ATMs by the end of 2023.
Lytania Johnson, CEO of FNB Personal Segment, emphasized the bank’s dedication to providing reliable, easy, and secure services. “ATMs play a vital role in ensuring our customers can access financial services without needing to visit a branch. While digital channels like our FNB App, Online banking, and Cellphone banking are widely used, many customers rely on ATMs for their daily financial transactions. Therefore, it is crucial that we invest in mechanisms to keep these devices operational at all times,” she said.
Zibu Nqala, CEO of FNB Points of Presence, highlighted the strategic importance of the standalone ATMs, particularly those in areas lacking backup power. “Installing UPS systems is a key step in enhancing our operational resilience and mitigating the effects of power outages, such as loadshedding. Our ATMs will now be able to function for at least four hours during power interruptions, ensuring customers can continue accessing services,” Nqala explained.
By 2024, FNB aims to equip 90% of its ATMs across South Africa with alternative and backup power supplies. This initiative underscores the bank’s dedication to operational resilience and energy efficiency. Many FNB branches are already equipped with backup power solutions to maintain service availability during outages.
FNB has earned numerous accolades for its commitment to customer value and innovation. Additionally, the Solidarity Bank Charges Report 2024 identified FNB’s Easy PAYU and Aspire bank accounts as offering the best value for money in South Africa, marking the third consecutive year FNB has been acknowledged for making its accounts affordable for customers.
