After four days of vibrant festivities, the 10th edition of Angola’s banana fair has successfully concluded. The event saw participation from local farmers, associations, and cooperatives from various municipalities, alongside industry representatives from across the nation, all gathering to discuss market expansion and highlight their production strengths.
During the closing ceremony, Maria Antónia Nelumba, the governor of Bengo province, expressed optimism about the future of banana production in Angola. “We will continue to produce and invest in banana processing, in order to take advantage of the entire production chain,” she stated.
This year’s edition surpassed the expectations of the organizers in terms of both attendance and revenue. Hélder Cardete, a representative from Novagrolíder, emphasized their commitment to market growth. “We’re going to continue producing and conquering markets. Our operating philosophy is to produce 70% for the domestic market and 30% for export,” he explained. Novagrolíder exports bananas to various countries, including Europe, South Africa, Namibia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Russia, and plans to expand further.
Since President João Lourenço’s initiative to diversify the Angolan economy through agriculture, bananas have emerged as a significant contributor, often referred to as Angola’s “green diamond.” This shift underscores the strategic importance of bananas in the nation’s economic diversification efforts.
Visitors to the fair, like Ester Jamba, praised the affordability of the produce. “The prices are affordable, a bunch of bananas costs 2,000.00 kwanzas to 3,000.00 kwanzas. I’m really satisfied,” she said.
The fair also highlighted the competitive nature of banana production in Africa. Celma, a first-time exhibitor, noted, “We brought a large quantity of bananas from the municipality of Nambuangongo, bananas of very good quality, and the fair is going very well, with strong competition.”
Angola’s status as the largest banana producer in Africa and the seventh largest globally was also spotlighted at the event. The country boasts an impressive annual output of over four million tonnes, cementing its role as a key player in the global banana market.
As the 10th banana fair draws to a close, the enthusiasm and commitment exhibited by participants reflect a promising future for Angola’s banana industry, both domestically and internationally.
