A Zambian family made history earlier this month when it bought an eight-year-old Boran bull at an auction valued at a staggering R2,3 million.
As per Farmers Weekly, the family splashed the whopping amount for the bull at an auction held by Hurwitz Farming.
The bull, Jumbo, was put on the market for a record-breaking R2.3 million compared to a previous price of the same breed which was set at R1.7 million.
Mutanda Farms, based in Zambia, purchased the highly sought-after bull that was bred by Hurwitz Farming in Bethal, Mpumalanga in South Africa.
After buying the beefy bull, Mutanda Farms said the animal cemented his legacy and they are humbled to make such a valued purchase.
“A bull that has cemented his legacy as the foremost sire in the breed today, consistently producing exceptional progeny time and again. We are truly humbled and proud to be welcoming Jumbo to Zambia,” said the farm.
On behalf of the breeder, Simeon Hurwitz of Hurwitz Farming, he praised the cow saying it’s genetics are highly sought after, while his semen can be stored in flasks for generations, for breeding purposes.
“Not only will the Cutury’s Mutanda Farms operation benefit from this remarkable bull, but the entire Boran breed in Zambia stands to gain from his genetics,” said Simeon.
“Although Zambia is one of the pioneering Boran breeding countries in Africa, the new genetics are bound to lend renewed impetus to the breed in that country. A bull like Jumbo’s semen will always be highly sought after and the semen can be used for countless generations to come.”
Originally coming from East Africa, Hurwitz, reassured potential breeders that the cattle are a no fuss and bring any farmer a hassle-free experience.
Before selling off Jumbo, he was used to bred cattle on Hurwitz Farming and Simeon says the impact of Jumbo on his farm and the one it is now going to will be felt for decades.
