EXPANDING 5G CONNECTIVITY COMPLEMENTED BY RENEWABLE ENERGY INITIATIVES
Mobile and telecommunications companies like MTN Zambia and Airtel have also committed to bringing in more inclusive and reliable connectivity under their 5G network Expansion programs, which are currently only accessible in the major and urban towns of Lusaka, Kitwe, Ndola and Copperbelt.
The improved connectivity is highly anticipated to increase speed and reduce the time it takes for SMEs to access digital tools through improved service connectivity.
Demand for network expansion from SMEs to access quality digital technological tools means demand for the much-needed energy to drive the expansions of the telecoms network systems. Hence, in a bid to address this energy demand fueled by technological advancements, there is the Choma Solar Power Station project, which is set to contribute sixty megawatts to the national grid upon its completion in 2025.
This initiative not only aims to boost connectivity but is also part of the government’s green energy program, which supports renewable energy alternatives. The program aims to address the country’s power shortages while ensuring reliable electricity for rural businesses to still access their digital tools through a modernized digital infrastructure.
EMPOWERING SMEs THROUGH TELECOM COMPANIES AND FINANCIAL SERVICES
Acknowledging the importance of SMEs in an economy plagued by unemployment and a limping health care system, is indeed one of the most crucial factors to yield positive and sustainable economic results, especially in an economy were SMEs represent about 90% of the total businesses and 88% of employment.
It is in this regard that the Zambian government has continued to encourage and empower digital technology adoptions by SMEs through different partnerships with private sectors like Liquid intelligent Technologies and CNC 360 consultants for tailored digital solutions, training, and support to make SMEs more agile , adaptive to new trends, and more competitive in the business arena

Technology is fast changing the way SMEs operate in Zambia with Many businesses Digitalizing their small medium businesses to manage inventory, process payments, and improve customer service interaction as Mobile money services such as Airtel Money and MTN MoMo continue to catch on and become a more widely accepted mode of payment for transactions, making business easier even in remote areas of Zambia especially now with the introduction of the new 500 kwacha bank notes from the Bank of Zambia.
SO HOW CAN SMEs NAVIGATE THEIR STRUGGLES?
However, despite the notable positive progress by Zambian SMEs, many businesses continue to struggle with the high costs of digital tools and a lack of technical skills, high interest rates, and compliance charges.
Training and more deliberate policies in this area will ease flow of businesses for SMEs but will requires targeted support, including affordable ICT solutions and digital literacy training in conjunction with Medium Enterprise Development and private sector companies to establish digital interventions that will allow SMEs to access materials, training, finance and support for them to fully self-actualize.
