The tech start-up scene in Africa is doing big things to solve local challenges. The work of African startups along with the glory they’ve received, will invite conversation around how Africa can build a collaborative ecosystem where tech start-ups, investors and incubators can partner up to empower the start-ups spearheading our futures.[JM1]
Leading this cross-continental discussion, our panellists hail from Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana. Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startup Ecosystems for Africa at Google Nigeria; Aiyegbusi is a business maven and alchemist to start-ups at the Black Founders Fund Africa; Llew Claasen, Founder of Newton Partners SA will also share the golden nuggets he has gathered over two decades as a strategist and senior manager in cryptocurrencies and digital product management. Norbert Adomako will share more on what it takes to create well-structured ecosystems from what he’s gained as Communications Lead at Ghanaian blockchain company Metis.
The public sector’s role in the digital economy
If Africa is using the wand of technology to decide its own trajectory, public sectors across Africa could benefit from playing a role in the advancement of smart municipalities and smart cities[2] [3] . Mactar Seck, Chief of Tech at the UN Economic Commission for Africa, will be addressing this alongside Head of IT at Sentech and Acting CIO of Post Bank, Nomahlubi Ogoh, and Joseph Ndaba, 4IR Commissioner at the Presidential Commission on the Fourth Industrial Commission in South Africa and CEO of Mafikeng Digital Innovation Hub.
These panellists will share their foresight to discuss how technology could enable more efficient access to basic services like transport, housing and healthcare.
Unveiling new technologies
Artificial intelligence has been a controversial addition to the traditional workplace. How can companies successfully onboard next gen tech such as ChatGPT while maintaining a culture that remains human-centric? Leading the insights on this will be Microsoft South Africa’s Chief Data Officer, Ayanda Ngcebetsha; and Susan Oh, Copia Global Co-Founder, as well as esteemed academic Prof. Arthur G.O. Mutambara, Director and Full Professor at the Institute for the Future of Knowledge.[4] [5] [JM6]
At the conference, for the first time ever, Matlhogonolo and Masego Mphahlele will unveil Africa’s first pair of digital x-ray glasses. The twin sisters will share and test this revolutionary health-tech invention with volunteers from the audience.
African online creators to empower the future
TikTok Africa’s Boniswa Sidwaba will be shoulder-to-shoulder with Alex Goldberg from the renowned Ogilvy Africa to discuss the uncapped potential of Africa’s creative economy. Creators from Africa are seeing an Afro-renaissance, invoked by their optimism and a knack for shaking things up. Sidwaba and Goldberg will share how they work with creatives through programmes; ways that creatives can find connection to networking and business opportunities; and how sharing authentic storytelling won many creators their success.
Catch-match: Speed meeting to help expand professional networks
Throughout the conference attendees will be given opportunities to speed-network through interactive sessions of ‘business catch-match’. Conventional conferences involve a full day of listening to expert discussions, Sentech Africa Tech Week will however allow attendees to interact, ask questions and introduce themselves using a throwable wireless microphone ball. They’ll also be able to pass the microphone to other delegates in business matchmaking areas in order to network.
The upcoming conference promises to be a truly immersive experience, featuring a diverse array of business personalities from the tech industry and a fresh take on traditional networking. With a focus on providing solutions to long standing local issues, this event is set to be a tour de force of innovation and collaboration. Attendees will have over 20 hours of networking opportunities, and those who are unable to attend in person can still participate virtually.
