Google has taken a subtle approach to unveiling its latest AI innovation, Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental. Rather than a grand announcement, the tech giant introduced the model through a changelog update for its Gemini chatbot app.
As the successor to the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, which debuted in February, the launch of Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental arrives at a time when the industry’s attention is fixed on Chinese AI startup DeepSeek. DeepSeek’s latest models, which are freely accessible to companies, have demonstrated performance that rivals or surpasses some of the top models from major American tech firms. This has sparked discussions in Silicon Valley and at the highest levels of the U.S. government regarding the competitive landscape of AI.
Google has positioned Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental as the most advanced model within its Gemini AI suite. Available to Gemini Advanced subscribers starting Thursday, the new model is designed to deliver “better factuality” and enhanced capabilities in coding and mathematics.
“Whether you’re tackling advanced coding challenges, like generating a specific program from scratch, or solving mathematical problems, like developing complex statistical models or quantum algorithms, 2.0 Pro Experimental will help you navigate even the most complex tasks with greater ease and accuracy,” Google stated in the changelog.
The model is accessible through Google’s Gemini Advanced plan, part of the Google One AI Premium subscription, as well as via Gemini for Google Workspace add-ons.
However, Google notes that Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental is still in an “early preview” phase and may exhibit “unexpected behaviours” or inaccuracies. Unlike other Gemini models, it lacks real-time information access and is incompatible with certain features of the Gemini app.
“We believe in rapid iteration and bringing the best of Gemini to the world, and we want to give Gemini Advanced subscribers priority access to our latest AI innovations,” Google added. “Your feedback helps us improve these models over time and learning from experimental launches informs how we release models more widely.”
In addition to the release of Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental, Google has also made its Gemini 2.0 Flash model, originally announced in December, available to all users within the Gemini app. For now, Gemini 2.0 Flash remains the app’s default AI model.
