Krutrim, an AI startup founded by Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder of Ola, has successfully raised a funding round of $50 million (R943 million) led by Matrix Partners India. This funding values Krutrim at $1 billion, making it the fastest unicorn in India and the country’s first AI startup to achieve unicorn status. Matrix Partners India has previously backed Aggarwal’s other ventures, Ola and Ola Electric.
Founded just last year, Krutrim focuses on developing a large language model trained on both local Indian languages and English. The startup aims to introduce a conversational AI assistant capable of understanding and speaking multiple Indian languages. The beta version of its chatbot is set to be released to consumers next month, with plans to subsequently roll out APIs for developers and enterprises.
Bhavish Aggarwal, commenting on the venture, stated, “India has to build its own AI, and at Krutrim, we are fully committed towards building the country’s first complete AI computing stack.” The funding will be utilized to further the development of Krutrim’s innovative AI solutions.
Investors globally are currently keen on supporting AI breakthroughs, anticipating significant advancements in the efficiency of various industries. Despite having one of the world’s largest startup ecosystems, India has yet to establish a notable presence in the AI sector. Krutrim aims to change this narrative by becoming a key player in the AI race.
While other Indian companies, such as Reliance, have announced plans to build large language models, Krutrim is among the few making substantial progress. Krutrim’s success in securing funding reflects investor confidence in its ability to contribute meaningfully to the global AI landscape.
