Wednesday, Meta (formerly the Facebook company) shared it had uncovered malware scams relating to ChatGPT in April 2023.
According to Social Media giant company, scammers use ChatGPT to attract users into downloading malicious apps and browser extensions. Meta said the malware scam cases are similar to the ones of cryptocurrency scams.
In a report shared on Wednesday, 3rd May 2023, Meta said it has found ten malware families and over thousand malicious links in March which were presented as tools for Artificial Intelligence chatbot, OpenAI.
According to report by Reuters, Meta said, In many cases found by the company, the malware was able to present working ChatGPT alongside abusive files.
Guy Rosen, Meta’s chief information security officer, said in a press briefing, “chatGPT is the new crypto” for bad actors.
“Our research and that of security researchers has shown time and again that malware operators, just like spammers, try to latch onto hot-button issues and popular topics to get people’s attention,” Meta said.
He added, “With an ultimate goal to trick people into clicking on malicious links or downloading malicious software, the latest wave of malware campaigns have taken notice of generative AI tools becoming popular.”
Meta executives said the company is preparing defences for a variety of potential abuses links to create artificial intelligence technologies like ChatGPT.
Experts have spoken out on potential dangers that could surround AI products like ChatGPT and what it could mean for cybersecurity.
Speaking to Verdict, Chris Anley, chief scientist at NCC Group said,
“Recent systems can provide individuals who have little or no coding ability with a tool to create or finetune malware that others have created to make it more effective.”
“For example, large language models can generate many variations on a specific piece of malware very easily, so defenses that depend on recognition of a verbatim piece of code – such as basic endpoint detection and response (EDR) software – can sometimes be bypassed by this generated malware.”
